Clean Wood FloorsBefore you get down on your knees and start scrubbing away at that annoying stain, there’s a few things you should know. All floors require proper care and that is why your manufacturer gave you a list of recommendations on how to clean your floor.

In case you don’t remember, here’s a few thing you should never attempt when cleaning your floors:

What Not to Do

  • Forgetting furniture protectors: always remember to protect your furniture when you’re moving it, tile will crack or chip if it is hit by something.
  • Using bleach: I know you really want to remove that ugly stain but bleach might end up doing more harm than good. Bleach and other ammonia-based cleaners will discolor grout lines on your tiles over time. Let’s not even mention what it does to wood floor. Instead, find what your manufacturer suggests or another mild cleaner and you still get excellent results. Remember, you should never use any type of cleaner directly on your floor, apply it on a cloth and use that on your floor.
  • Using scrubbing materials: never use steel wool or other abrasive material when cleaning your floors. Both tiles and wood have a finish that protects and seals the actual material. When you scrub that away, water could seep in and rot wood or damage the tile.
  • Let spills sit: liquid stains seep into the wood or tile and discolor the grout or wood; they literally leave a mark on your floor. It is crucial to wipe off stains immediately with a damp non-abrasive cloth. Cleaning up spills is such an easy thing, but for some reason so many people just don’t do it. Hear are some practical ways you can protect your wood floors from spills:
  • Over-wetting the tile: you need water to clean up floor but excess water may seep between the planks of a timber floor causing them to bulge and that will cause permanent damage. Tiles floors don’t like excessive water either, the minerals in tap water may cause discoloration. Use a properly wrung mop or just dry the floor afterwards.
  • Exposing your floors to the sun: areas exposed to the sun fade and become uneven from the rest of the floor. Remember to close the curtains when sunlight becomes too much.
  • Placing flower pots directly on the floor: it’s not always dangerous but could be. Cracks on the pots leak water and it can’t be spotted quickly because it’s hidden. It’s better if you move the plants higher but if you can’t, remember place a pad under the pot. The same applies to pet food and water dishes.
  • Get any mop or vacuum: the mop needs to be damp but should not slather extra water on the floors. Also, when you’re shopping for a vacuum, find one without a beater bar or brush roll or alternatively one that turn off these parts as they may scratch your floor and remove the protective finish making your floor dull. This one is a biggie. You can learn more about hardwood floor vacuums from The Home Floor Experts.
  • Forget the doormat: prevent entry of dust early by using a doormat before it gets on your floor. Dust particles are abrasive and would scratch your floor gradually.
  • Forget about caulking and sealing: finally, regular maintenance will protect your floor for longer. Sealing protects your tiles from stains, remember not to use chemical wax because it eventually turns to a black spot.

By now you might be thinking it’s too complicated but it’s impossible to do all the above mistakes, it’s why I wrote a ‘not to do’ list because the ‘to do’ would be lengthier.

My day, well It started out really really blue and depressed about my situation, and not being able to russle up a job. It would be so easy to crawl back into my “hole” and not do anything. Just give up. But thanks to all of you in part, I won’t give up.

So after a couple hrs of feeling bad for myself I talked myself out of the funk and got dressed and went to Barnes & Noble and put in an application there. I love that store. So I figure the worst that could happen is that I’ll get a crappy paying job in a store I love and get a discount on books for the Xmas season perhaps. We shall see. The manager will be there on Monday to go over the applications for this week the clerk told me. Its a different avenue and who knows. Anything could happen.

While I was there I treated myself to a Frappacino and the Interweave Knits Holiday issue which is full of neat things to knit. Yum Yum!
